Does morality matter in sports? Absolutely not…

13 Jan

This onmilwaukee.com article hits the nail on the head.

I hate that professional athletes make billions of dollars, but social workers and nurses have to fight to keep food on the table. What significant contribution are these spoiled jocks making to society? None. Zero. Zip.

Kobe Bryant. Ben Roethlisberger. Tiger Woods. Brett Favre. Michael Vick.  The list goes on and on. These are the men little boys look up to. Rapists, sex offenders, dog murderers. Think about it, if your next door neighbor or best friend’s boyfriend sexually harassed a girl, cheated on his woman, or abused animals you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with him, but because these assholes are good at sports (which by the way HAVE NO RELEVANT BEARING ON SOCIETY) they get a free pass.

It’s something that makes my blood boil and someday when my son (unfortunately inevitably) looks up to some spoiled gunslinger, I’m going to have a hard time supporting this idolatry. Grrrrr…..

This sentence from the article in particular sums up my feelings:

“These athletes are famous for their God-given physical ability, not because of any other contribution to society.”
